The Commonwealth Games comes to Birmingham 2022!
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will demonstrate the very best of Britain to the world.
Running from the 28th of July to the 8th of August, With over 4,500 Athletes, 72 Countries competing and 283 medals up for grabs, it's sure to be the biggest event in the UK this year.
Birmingham will be buzzing with an exciting sporting extravaganza. The city has been selected as the 2022 host for this global event and work is under way to make this event a great success.
The host city of Birmingham is the largest English city outside London. Her Majesty The Queen officially launched the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in a unique ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
The Queen, accompanied by The Earl of Wessex, attended a special ceremony on the forecourt of the Palace to launch the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay. They were joined by Baton Bearers made up of athletes who will be competing in this year’s Games, young flag bearers from the West Midlands, the Birmingham 2022 Hometown Heroes and representatives from across the Commonwealth.
The Queen’s Baton Relay is a tradition that celebrates, connects and excites communities from across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games. The Queen’s Baton will now visit all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth for 294 days, covering 140,000 kilometres. The global journey will conclude at the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on 28 July 2022.
The Commonwealth Games have included truly great sporting moments. This includes the "Mile of the Century" race between England's Roger Bannister and Australia's John Landy in 1954, Cathy Freeman's display of the Aboriginal flag and the weightlifting genius of South African born Precious McKenzie.
No other international multi-sport Games has the same mix of competitors and events.
As well as accommodating the key Olympic sports such as athletics, swimming and gymnastics, sports such as bowls, netball and squash also find a place on the Commonwealth Games programme.
Since the Games began, they have taken place every four years with the exception of 1942 and 1946.
Known as the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966 and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974, they have since been known as simply the Commonwealth Games.
