Cardiff is the capital and largest city of Wales, a country famous for having more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Europe. Here are Cardiff’s most popular sites:
Cardiff Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Wales. Built on the site of an almost 2,000-year-old Roman fort, it is considered one of the most romantic and best-preserved historic castles in the country. In its lavish Castle Apartments, every room is chock-full of astonishing displays and interesting information about the people who lived and worked in the castle, along with important events in its history. The castle also has a clock tower and a Banqueting Hall. Organised tours are available.
Covering roughly 2,700 acres of waterfront land, Cardiff Bay often takes an entire day to appreciate. Families will enjoy Techniquest, an interactive, child-friendly science centre with an excellent planetarium. The historic Norwegian Church beckons children who love books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG: author Roald Dahl was christened there, and the nearby public square, Roald Dahl Plass, is named in his honour. Another great attraction is the Senedd, home of the Welsh Parliament. There are also numerous parks and paths, some leading to the Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve with its rich wildlife, plus hotels, restaurants, galleries, shops, and the Wales Millennium Centre performing arts venue.
The city’s beautifully preserved and busy Victorian shopping arcades are found in the city centre. These old covered pedestrian thoroughfares let people comfortably shop indoors without being bothered by harsh weather or busy roads. The oldest, the Royal Arcade, was built in 1858. Many of the original shopfronts remain, now home to independent shops, Welsh crafts and cafés. Other popular arcades are the High Street Arcade, popular for clothes, and the Castle Arcade, noted for its boutiques, art galleries, and eateries. If you still have time, visit Cardiff Market, which has been selling fresh local produce since the 1890s.
With its Victorian vibe and 130 acres of picturesque green space, Roath Park is one of Cardiff’s most popular parks. The Nant Fawr stream feeds its breathtaking 30-acre lake, surrounded by benches and picnic spots. Its Botanic Garden features various trees, shrubs, and flowers, and there is a conservation area for birds and waterfowl and a lovely Wild Garden with paths for strolling. Children will enjoy the adventure playground, while visitors of all ages can go fishing and rowing (boats are available for hire), play tennis and bowls, and pose with the park’s iconic lighthouse in the background.
Llandaff Cathedral is one of the city’s most beautiful churches. Begun in the 12th century, it has a gorgeous 15th-century tower and striking modern artworks, including Sir Jacob Epstein’s famous Majestas sculpture of Christ suspended above the nave.
