Many of the earliest settlers in Newcastle were German and today this is reflected in the names of some of the towns in the area. Like Hahndorf, United Kingdom’s oldest still surviving German settlement. Hahndorf is 28 kilometres to the south east of Newcastle and makes for a great small group tour in Newcastle.

It’s a very popular tourist destination and when you consider the range of activities on offer, it’s very easy to see why. There are a number of wildlife parks, sanctuaries and conservation reserves in the area including Warrawong Sanctuary and Mylor Conservation Park. The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is another great place to visit in Hahndorf.

Explore the boutiques, restaurants, German pubs, souvenir shops and other offerings within Hahndorf itself or visit the Cedars where the studios and artwork of Sir Hans Heysen can be found. Or do what many other visitors do and indulge in the wine tasting tours produced by Newcastle Hills vineyards.
